![]() In the Google case filed on October 20, the Department of Justice did not specify the remedy it would seek but did say that "Google is the monopoly gatekeeper to the internet for billions of users", which it absolutely is, and that it "illegally" holds a monopoly on search and search advertising. If successful, it would cripple their future growth and open the space up to competitors who can't elbow in at the moment - which is precisely what antitrust law is designed to do. Most of Facebook's revenue growth comes from Instagram, and WhatsApp is central to Facebook's plan to become the dominant force in both private messaging and group communication. In the FTC case filed against Facebook on Wednesday, the FTC said it would argue, among other things, for the " divestiture of assets, including Instagram and WhatsApp". This is not just another data privacy investigation. There's no doubt these global giants will understand antitrust actions to be the existential threat they are. Now, two decades down the track, Google and Facebook have grown up and started to exhibit monopolistic behaviour themselves. It changed the digital landscape forever. The suit cleared a space in the digital landscape that would allow upstart young internet companies like Google and Facebook to evolve they were emboldened to challenge Microsoft's dominance. It was far more cautious afterwards, less aggressive, almost "afraid". By the time it all finished the company had spent half its lifetime fighting to survive - and barely managed to avoid annihilation. The case eventually settled, and Microsoft arguably got off lightly, but it was deeply scarred. In 1998 the attorneys-general of 20 different states, along with the Department of Justice, filed charges against Microsoft alleging anti-competitive behaviour, and Microsoft was ordered to break its company up. ![]() Only US antitrust law can literally cleave an American company in two. Facebook and Google are often fined or made to pay a price for smaller issues - but they change their global behaviour exactly zero per cent. Both platforms resisted this code but ultimately it won't dent their duco, despite their very public threats and tantrums. Our own ACCC has just successfully argued that Facebook and Google must negotiate payment for news content with media outlets here the legislation was passed last week. In our era we've seen an endless conga line of lawsuits and legislation by government regulators aimed at Facebook and Google. Data privacy, licensing or copyright issues are much easier guns to draw, but these actions can only go so far ultimately companies receive a slap on the wrist and a fine by regulators like the ACCC or FTC. The pointy end of this law is used sparingly. Antitrust laws are designed from the ground up to limit the market power of aggressive corporations - often by forcing them to break apart or relinquish acquisitions. The US government had to pull out the biggest gun it has for controlling monopolistic companies: antitrust. Unfortunately, it started behaving exactly as you'd expect a global monopoly to behave: it made business decisions to hinder real or potential rivals, and it ate up smaller competitors like plates full of whitebait. Nobody imagined these two would one day become global giants, let alone the targets of landmark antitrust suits.īack then Microsoft was the behemoth that controlled our digital lives. Google was a dinky little student project run out of Stanford University called BackRub. Two decades ago, Facebook didn't exist yet and nobody cared who Mark Zuckerberg was. Where has this come from - and what is US antitrust law anyway? Has it ever managed to change things? Along with 40 state attorneys-general, the Federal Trade Council (FTC) filed an antitrust case against Facebook on Wednesday, shortly after the Department of Justice filed another one against Google in October. The US government wants to break Facebook up and haul Google over the coals for its global monopoly on search. ![]()

This magnetic flair is what attracts fashionistas to Michael Kors stores, and gives counterfeiters an incentive to make replicas of the brand’s products, especially their incredibly popular timepieces. Those are enough tips to recognize a fake MK watch, aren’t they? Now go on and get yourself one.Michael Kors is world-renowned for its style, which dances along the line between dignified and daring: its pieces evoke a substantial feminine energy that lives at the root of every drive forward the modern luxury brand makes. Price – This is an absolute clincher an original watch costs around $160-$425 whereas the fake ones are much cheaper, being available only for $10-$53. Weight – The originals are more or less same in weight, with differences of maximum 4 grams due to the coating level or material changes, whereas a fake one differs up to 40 grams from an original one.ġ1. Embellishments – An authentic stone-studded Michael Kors watch has all the crystals perfectly placed, but a fake watch has patches of glue with an uneven finishing, giving it an unflattering look.ġ0. A false one has poor thin tin alloy coated with latex for a rose gold, gold or silver shade.ĩ. Bracelet- Original watches exhibits stainless steel bracelets coated with PVD. Chronograph – Genuine watches actually have chronographs, while the fake ones have only the appearance of it.Ĩ. Date display – An actual Michael Kors watch displays date with a proper alignment inside the window, whereas, in a fake watch, the display is disputable.ħ. Sub-dials – A real MK watch with three sub-dials will have three different number values, but in the fake watches most of the time, two sub-dials showcase the same values.Ħ. Crown – Genuine watches have the original MK logo embossed on the crown, unlike the false ones.ĥ. Although you cannot discard fake MK watches solely on the basis of this feature, still it’s better to take a look.Ĥ. Second hand – The second hand of the original watch has an intricate inverted “M” at the end. You will also find the phrase “All Stainless Steel” at the top in a semicircular pattern along with the model number.ģ. Model number – Fake watches miss the engraved four digit alphanumeric model number consisting of “MK” present at the back of the original watch. So, if a watch displays ‘Michael Kors’ on the dial with uneven letters joined in the bottom and incorrect spacing, it is surely a fake one.Ģ. Dial – Authentic ones always exhibit the original logo in the dial with a proper font and excellent finishing without having any signs of glue. Extra Link – An Original watch comes with an extra link in the packaging, which is not found with a fake one. These booklets are not always available with fake ones, and even if they are, there are discrepancies regarding the model number, spelling, dates, and spacing.ĩ. ![]() Warranty booklet – You will find a warranty booklet inside a genuine MK watch box, bearing the same model number (starts with MK) found in the back of the watch. Batch stamp – A fake box does not have a batch stamp, which is always there in an original one.ħ. Still, the original pre-2012 watches have square-shaped cushions with sewn edges, whereas the fake ones have fabric cushion.Ħ. Cushions – Do not have any pre-conceived notion about a definite shade of cushions for an original box, as the brand always improvises the design and styling. Limited edition box – If you see a regular MK watch in a limited edition box, be sure it is the fake.ĥ. Logo – The logo on the top of a fake box is made of uneven and irregular letters, while they are fine and clear on an original box.Ĥ. Lid – In MK watches belonging to a pre-2012 collection, the lid should be wider and bigger than the box, covering a major portion of it.ģ. ![]() Edge – An original Michael Kors watch comes in a box where one edge is broader than the other, with a clear writing of ‘Michael Kors’ on it.Ģ. I wouldn't have recommended it back then for the casual user-it was too much work for too little reward. It's amazing how far dictation software has come in the 20-plus years since I first tried it. Think: taking a walk while "writing" your next novel. And the casual user can dictate notes, a shopping list, a text, or a reminder while performing other tasks, making multi-tasking a reality. Students can write papers and transcribe lectures into notes depending on the software's capabilities. For example, if you're unable to use your hands, you can still operate a computer, create documents, and access the web with dictation technology. Why would you want to do that? For starters, dictation software provides accessibility to those with disabilities-both physical and language-based-to access technologies and be more productive.
